Preparation and Curing Kinetics of Hydantoin Epoxy/ DDS System

ABSTRACT:We have synthesized hydantoin epox y resin and hydantoin epoxy/ dia minophenyl sulfon ( DDS) system.Hydantoin epoxy resin w as substantiated by FT-IR and1H-NMR spectrum. Nonisothermal differential scanning calorimet ry ( DSC) w as examined to follow the curing process. The analyses show that there is an exothermic react ion peak from 100 ℃ to 307℃ for the hydanto in epoxy / DDS system and top of the peak is 197℃ , which confirms main reaction of hydantoin epox y/ DDS system. Curing characterist icness of hydantoin epox y resin is the similar w ith that of dig lycidyl ether of bisphenol A and cycloaliphat ic epoxy resin ( TDE-85) . The hydantoin epoxy/ DDS cured system
w as made and its propert ies w ere studied. Investigat ions show that mechanical propert ies and the heat resistance of hydantoin epox y resin have the same w ith of dig ly cidyl ether of bisphenol A, flame-retardant characterist icness of hydantoin epoxy resin is good than of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, the flex ural strength is 111MPa, f lexural modul is 4.14 GPa, impact strength is 14.8 kJ/ m2, T g is 142 ℃ , and limit oxygen index is 26.6, so hydantoin epoxy resin can become mat rix fo performance composite material manufacture and adhesive application in automobile industries, shipbuilding, aerospace and laminates.
